Experimental Investigation of Scour Hole Characteristics for Different Shapes of Piers Caused by Flood Hydrograph Succeeding Steady Flow

In this study, the scour depth and dimensions of hole around different shaped piers for cases hydrographs succeeding steady flow were studied experimentally. The experiments carried out by using circular, square, rectangular, lenticular rectangular with trapezoidal nose to compare various geometries at same conditions. Numerous conducted in a flume (18.6 m long, 0.80 wide 0.75 deep) triangular hydrographs. bed 26 cm thickness consists uniform graded material D50 =1.68 mm. clear water temporal variations equilibrium depths front pier recorded two cameras. lateral sides downstream also measured. Regression analysis was performed order derive empirical relations predict case unsteady flow. shape factor values investigated based on experimental findings obtained compared those available literature. performance relation circular tested limited data smallest observed noses pier. increase other cross-sections following order: noses, square piers.
